3 Common Heat Pump Issues in Newport News, VA

As winter settles in here in Newport News, VA, it’s time to check your heat pump to make sure it’s ready to keep you warm throughout the winter. While a heat pump is essential to keeping your home comfortable, they have some common issues that are easy to fix. Here are three of them, with tips for resolving them.

1. Heat Pump Failure to Turn On

If your heat pump doesn’t turn on, it could be due to a few reasons. Where could be a faulty circuit breaker, or the reverse valve may not be working. You could also have a heating system with a faulty capacitor or an issue with the thermostat.

To resolve the problem, first ensure that the thermostat is on and displaying correctly. If the thermostat is fine, it may be an issue with the circuit breaker.

If not, then it could be an issue with the reversing valve itself. While it’s OK to check the thermostat yourself, you should leave the rest of the heating issues to trained professionals.

2. Heat Pump Not Providing Warm Air

Heat pump malfunctions are fairly common. Sometimes, it’s an issue with dirty filters, low refrigeration levels or even a blocked unit.

First, change or clean the air filters to remove any debris and avoid clogging. Although the air filters protect you from contaminants, they often get dirty and reduce airflow into the air handler. Also, the outdoor unit could get blocked by snow or leaves that keep air from flowing into the system.

Look for any signs of refrigerant leaks. Low levels of refrigerant signal a defective cooling loop. To fix this issue, contact a trained professional to check the system, replenish the refrigerant, and make any necessary repairs.

3. Heat Pump Running Constantly

If your heating system keeps running constantly, you will see a spike in energy bills even when the temperature is milder outside. Some causes of the problem may be within your control, but others need a professional to fix them.

First, check the setting on the thermostat. Ensure that the temperature settings are not extreme.

It’s not strange for your heating system to malfunction at times due to wear and tear. That doesn’t mean that you should compromise your comfort. Contact our team at Lighthouse Mechanical for all your heat pump services in Newport News, VA.
