Let’s Face It: Replacing an inefficient central air
conditioning unit or heat pump and finding a licensed contractor
that you can count on is a daunting task for most
homeowners.
We all know that upgrading your home cooling and
heating system with new high efficiency equipment can significantly
reduce your energy bill and make your home a more comfortable place
to live. Today’s energy efficient systems use 30-50% less
energy to cool a home than models made in the 1970’s. Even
if your system is only 10 years old, replacing it with a more efficient
model can save 20-30%. However, the age old problem is, “Where
do I get the money” needed to make the improvement?

Energy Savings vs. Efficiency Rating
The graph above shows the significant impact that
high efficiency air conditioning can have on energy use and cooling
costs. SEER is an abbreviation for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating.
It is the most commonly used measure of the efficiency of consumer
central air conditioning systems. The national efficiency standard
requires a minimum SEER of 10 for central air conditioners. However,
when shopping for air conditioners, look for SEER ratings of 13
or over. The higher the efficiency rating, the more you save when
cooling your home.
